NEW YORK, N.Y., October 2, 2018 – Monroe Express women's soccer defeated the Borough of Manhattan Community College Panthers, 2-0, on Tuesday at Pier 40 to pick up their first win of the 2018 season.
After a number of early shots by the Express went wide,
Joanne Chavez gave Monroe the lead with her first goal of the season, dribbling past her defending and firing the ball into the back of the net in the 22nd minute.
Monroe outshot the Panthers, 17-1, in the first half, and 27-7, for the game, but headed into halftime with just a one-goal lead.
The Express continued their charge in the second half, holding off an equalizer until
Dejanae Small sealed the victory for Monroe with her 86th minute goal. Small knocked in her first goal of the season off a rebound, giving the Express a 2-0 lead they'd never relinquish.
Leslly Marmolejo led the Express with 13 shots, eight of which were on goal, while Chavez tallied her one goal on eight shots.
Ilda Limon,
Jessica Fernandez De Jesus and
Dejanae Small also tallied two shots apiece.
In goal for the Express,
Julia Hermoso played all 90 minutes, making six saves.
The Express are back in action on Thursday, Oct. 4 when they head to Selden, N.Y. to take on Suffolk County Community College at 4 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
