HILLBURN, N.Y., October 16, 2018 –
Mamadou Diombera and
Elhadj Diallo each tallied two scores, as Monroe Express men's soccer wrapped up the 2018 regular season with a 7-1 win over Rockland Community College on Tuesday at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
17:47 into the first half,
Ryan Smart got the Express on the board off an assist from Diombera, opening the scoring for Monroe.
Just about five minutes later,
Abdoul Sangare scored off a free kick, netting his fifth goal of the year to give the Express a 2-0 lead.
Rockland cut the Express' lead in half prior to the end of the first half on David Mota's 31st-minute goal, but the Express quickly pulled away in the second half.
Back-to-back goals from Diombera within the first ten minutes of the second half extended Monroe's lead to 4-1, as Diombera knocked in his team-high 14th and 15th goals of the year.
Elhadj Diallo made it 5-1 in the 61st minute, scoring off
Keshane Bedward's second assist of the afternoon, before
Keybi Garcia netted his second goal of the year just a few minutes later to make it 7-1.
Diallo later finished off the scoring for Monroe, knocking through his second of the match in the 78th minute, off the assist from
Balvin West.
Mustapha Ceesay and the Express defense held Rockland to just one goal on four shots, while the Express outshot the Hawks, 14-4.
Diombera and Diallo each led the Express with two goals and an assist, while Diombera notched a team-high four shots.
With the win, the Express finish the regular season 8-3, second in NJCAA Division III Region XV with an 8-2 conference record. The Express will open Region XV postseason play on Saturday, Oct. 20 when they take on the 7th seed, Dutchess Community College, at 1 p.m. at Pace Stadium in Pleasantville, N.Y.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
