Monroe Express Women’s Volleyball Splits Double-Dual against Bronx and Hostos

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y., October 13, 2018 – Monroe Express women's volleyball split a pair of matches at a Region XV Double-Dual hosted by Dutchess Community College, falling to Bronx Community College, 3-1, before coming from behind to top Hostos Community College, 3-2. With the two results, the Express move to 2-13 (2-12 Region XV) on the season.
 
Match 1: Bronx 3, Monroe 1
The Broncos jumped out to a quick 2-0 set lead, taking down the Express in the first set, 25-12, and in the second set, 25-14. Monroe rallied to win the third set, 25-20, to force a fourth set, but Bronx held off the late Express charge, winning the fourth set, 25-19.
 
Dawn Franklin led the Express with nine kills, four aces and two blocks, while Rachel Arias tallied a team-high 21 assists. Also turning in team-highs were Dennyfer Hernandez, with 11 digs, and Julie Trowers with three blocks to go along with her seven kills.
 
Match 2: Monroe 3, Hostos 2
Hostos jumped ahead with a 25-19 victory in the first set, and after a closely-contested second led, pulled out a 25-22 victory to take a 2-0 lead.
 
But the Express battled back, winning the third set 25-23, to the cut the deficit to just one. The Caimans and Express went back-and-forth in the fourth set, before Monroe eventually pulled out a 29-27 victory to force a decisive fifth set.
 
And with momentum on their side, the Express dispatched the Caimans with a 15-7 fifth set victory to complete the comeback and win the match, 3-2.
 
Franklin again led the Express in kills with five, while Hernandez added four and three aces. Arias again led the Express in assists with 27, to go along with her three aces, while Jessica Gonzalez notched a career-high 22 digs.
 
The Express are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when they travel to Middletown, N.Y. to wrap up their home-and-home with the Orange County Community College Colts at 7 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
