BRONX, N.Y., October 19, 2017 – The Monroe Express women's volleyball fell in a closely contested match to Dutchess Community College, 3-1, Thursday in their final home match of the season at Roberto Clemente State Park.
 
After the Falcons took the first set by the score of 25-14, the Express stormed back to even the match at one set apiece.
 
Monroe and Dutchess went back-and-forth early in the second set, before the Express pulled away and took set two, 25-21.
 
The third set started like the second, back-and-forth with the Express maintaining a slight edge before the Falcons rallied for seven-straight points to eke out a 25-19 victory. And in the fourth-set, with the Express leading 11-10, Dutchess went on a 15-4 run to win the match and take a 25-16 fourth set victory.
 
Jayleen Orta, Yarielys Fernandez and Jessica Gonzalez led the Express with five service aces apiece, while Gonzalez and Orta also led the way with nine and seven digs, respectively. Dawn Franklin led Monroe with five kills while also adding three blocks, while Fernandez led the team with her eight assists as well.
 
The Express wrap up their inaugural season with two matches on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Poughkeepsie, NY against Suffolk County Community College and Nassau Community College starting at 12 p.m.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, will have six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning in the fall of 2017.
