Tyrell Walker joined the Monroe University - Bronx men's basketball program as an Assistant Coach in October of 2025.
Walker brings a dynamic, multi-sport background and a proven record of player development and leadership to every program he joins. A native of New York, Walker began his collegiate athletic career at Monroe College (Now Monroe University), where he was part of the school’s inaugural football program in 2012. After one season, he was recruited to SUNY Cortland, playing football in 2013 and competing in lacrosse from 2013–2015. Walker later transferred to William Paterson University, where he played wide receiver from 2015–2016. Following two years there, he was recruited to the University at Albany after being spotted during the 2016 New York Jets Pro Day. Though he chose to focus on academics shortly after joining UAlbany’s football team, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Sociology in 2019.
Walker began his coaching journey with the Brooklyn Nets, serving as a Jr. NBA Coach before advancing to Assistant Director and Administrative Specialist with the Brooklyn Nets Academy. In addition, he founded Smoke Athletics, a nonprofit dedicated to skill development, mentorship, and structured athletic opportunities for youth ages 6–18. His coaching résumé also includes work with AAU programs such as the NJ Beasts and City Rocks NY, and participation in camps hosted by the New York Knicks, Siena Saints, Stanford Cardinals, and UAlbany Great Danes.
In June 2022, following completion of his MBA in Sport Administration and Business Management from Manhattanville University, Walker was invited to Stanford University to shadow the Men’s Basketball program and observe the Athletic Director. Later that year, he joined Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (ACPHS) as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Operations Assistant, expanding his role to skills development training for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams. During his tenure, he helped guide the Division II program to consistent success, achieving improved USCAA Tournament seeding and tying a school record for wins across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He led opponent scouting, video analysis, and game strategy, resulting in a 33.96%-win rate over two seasons, while mentoring standout athletes including a three-time YSCC All-Conference selection and YSCC Player of the Year. Off the court, he established a culture of accountability and integrity, overseeing study halls, academic tracking, and community engagement events.
Following his time at ACPHS, Walker returned to his hometown to provide support for his family while continuing to grow professionally. During this period, he accepted a recurring role as Director of Operations for Nike Sports Camps, where he contributes to program operations, athlete and participant engagement, and individualized support for children and young adults.
Walker currently serves as Rehabilitation Specialist for Venture Together, Rehabilitation Services for Special Needs, and Defensive Coordinator for the Junior Varsity football team at Cardinal Hayes High School, a role he was hired for in April 2024.
Off the court, Walker enjoys fitness, cooking, and spending time with his dog, King. He remains active in local basketball and flag football leagues and continues to mentor young athletes through Smoke Athletics.
