Richard Garcés officially joined the Monroe University - Bronx Express baseball program as an assistant coach/pitching coach in January of 2024. Garcés brings a wealth of experience to the program, with many years of pitching and coaching at the major league/professional level.

In Garcés' first season at Monroe, the Express advanced all the way to the Region 15 Championship Round and defeated two nationally ranked teams during the season. He helped develop star pitcher Adrian Quezada, who was named to the NJCAA All-America third team and was selected to the All-Region 15 first team. Under Garcés' guidance, Quezada and Jayden Moya each threw a no-hitter during the season, with the former eventually earning a spot on the NCAA Division I Queens University of Charlotte baseball team beginning with the 2025 season.  

Garcés' was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball as he played for the Minnesota Twins in 1990 and 1993, the Florida Marlins and Chicago Cubs in 1995, and the Boston Red Sox from 1996-2002. The Maracay, Venezuela native had an impressive record of 23-10 during his time in the majors with seven saves, 53 holds, and 296 strikeouts in his career. Within his span of playing in the MLB, Garcés also pitched for Tigres de Aragua (1987-1998) of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.

After his major league baseball career concluded, Garcés coached for several professional teams in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. He served as the bullpen coach for Aguilas del Zulia from 2008-2010, and then had the same role for Leones del Caracas from 2015-2016. Garcés was then promoted to pitching coach for Leones del Caracas and served in that role from 2016 until 2017. After that, he was the pitching coach for the Bridgeport Blue Fish, an American minor league baseball team in Bridgeport, Conn., during the 2017 season. 

In 2022, Garcés worked as a pitching coordinator for the Connecticut Mets Baseball Academy.
