BAYSIDE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx women's volleyball team earned a convincing 3-0 sweep over Queensborough Community College in regional play on Wednesday evening at RFK Gym, winning by set scores of 25-17, 25-15, and 25-16. The victory improves the Express to 12-7 overall and 11-2 against Region 15 opponents. It's the second win over the Tigers this year for the Blue and Gold.
Monroe set the tone early, taking the opening set 25-17. The Express continued to build momentum in the second stanza, limiting Queensborough to 15 points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Monroe then closed out the sweep with a 25-16 victory in the third set.
Yamelyn Bonilla led the Express with seven kills, while Nicole Garrett contributed six and Ayleenee Salbitani Lopez added four. Salbitani Lopez also paced Monroe from the service line with seven aces, followed by Garrett with five and Darilenia Paulino with three. Paulino finished with 15 assists to direct the Express' offense.
Defensively, Jopnerys Espinal Chalas led Monroe with 11 digs, while Salbitani Lopez recorded six and Paulino added five. Robyn Eddy led the team with two total blocks.
Monroe made its mark from the service line, recording 19 aces compared with Queensborough's three. The Express also held advantages in kills, 24-18, and assists, 20-16, to help secure the straight-set victory.
Queensborough (7-8, 7-8 Region 15) was led by Laury Rodriguez and Madison Princivil, who each recorded six kills. Rodriguez added eight assists and seven digs, while Camila Pintado led the team with nine digs.
The Express return to action Saturday, October 17 with a Region 15 Double Dual at Falcon Hall Gymnasium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Monroe will compete against Orange County Community College 12 p.m., and then take on the host school Dutchess at 1:30 p.m.
