BRONX – The Monroe University – Bronx women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Queensborough Community College on Wednesday evening at Roberto Clemente State Park Gym. The Express won by scores of 25-14, 25-6, and 25-12 to improve to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in Region 15 play.
Sarai Hernandez led Monroe offensively with seven kills, while Ayleenee Salbitani Lopez added five and Yamelyn Bonilla recorded four.
The Express controlled the match from the opening set, hitting .150 in the first frame before limiting Queensborough to a -.161 hitting percentage for the match. Monroe closed out the second set, 25-6, while holding the Tigers to just three kills and a -.190 hitting percentage. The Blue and Gold won the third set in wire-to-wire fashion to clinch the three-set sweep.
"Finding our rhythm again; healing mentally, reconnecting as a team, and playing the game we love," Express Head Coach Odaly Aponte-Orta said. "One point, one moment, one ritmo at a time."
Salbitani Lopez was a force from the service line, recording nine aces, while Darilenia Paulino added five and Nicole Garrett contributed four.
Paulino also directed the Monroe offense with 17 assists, while Bonilla led the Express with eight digs. Salbitani Lopez and Jopnerys Espinal Chalas each added five digs.
As a team, Monroe finished with 22 kills, 24 service aces, 22 assists, 29 digs, and one block while hitting .121.
For Queensborough (4-4, 4-4 Region 15), Madison Princivil led the Tigers with four kills, two aces, and seven digs.
The Express return to action Saturday, October 3 in a Region 15 double dual against Fashion Institute of Technology and Borough of Manhattan Community College. Both games will be held at BMCC Gymnasium starting at 12 p.m. versus FIT and 1:30 p.m. versus BMCC.
