Monroe got off to a slow start, falling behind 12-10 just 5:45 into the battle. Salimah Williams got the Express back on track with a jump shot to tie it up. After the Caimans (6-8, 4-5 Region 15) regained a narrow one-point lead, Salimah Williams struck again with a 2-point basket to put the Express in front, 14-13, with 2:21 to go in the opening period.

Hostos added two free throws with 6:03 to go before the break to end the Express' 11-1 run. The Caimans pulled closer as a 3-point field goal by Yuderlis Martinez shrunk Monroe's lead to 25-20 and ended the Caimans' 8:34 stretch without converting a field goal.

Monroe countered with eight unanswered points, capped off by a layup from Salimah Williams, to take a commanding 33-20 vantage with 4:03 to go until the break. Monroe eventually took a 40-24 lead into the intermission.
