Express Women's Volleyball Earns Convincing Victory Over Roxbury

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx women's volleyball team had a successful home opener on Sunday afternoon thanks to a 3-0 victory over Roxbury Community College. Set scores were 25-9, 25-8, and 25-14. The contest took place at American Turners New York.

It marks the first victory of the season for the Express who advance their record to 1-2. It was the season opener for the Tigers (0-1).

Monroe led each set from wire-to-wire which includes earning a 5-0 lead in each of the first two frames and then a 6-0 benefit in the third game. 

"Proud of this group of young ladies for making the right adjustments, learning how to play together, and finding a way to win," Express Head Coach Odaly Aponte-Orta said. "Growth and teamwork made the difference today."

As a team, Monroe compiled a hitting percentage of .289 and earned 21 service aces during the afternoon.

Leading the way for the Blue and Gold was Cherlialix Carmona who slammed home six kills, scored five service aces, and provided three digs. Gabriela De La Rosa generated four terminations and three service victories. Kaileex Batista led all players with six aces and eight assists. Aleishka Diaz had a strong match defensively with eight digs, while compiling three helpers and a trio of service aces to spark the offense. 

Also helping the Express was Julia Ramos who produced seven assists and three service wins. Robyn Eddy and Yamelyn Bonilla each scored two kills. Brycelynn Paul and Diamondnique Stephenson both nailed successful attacks.

The Express will be off until Wednesday, September 10, when they travel to Cranford, N.J. to take on Union College. First serve at Union College Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
