Record-Setting Day Propels Express Baseball to Region 15 Win Over Dutchess

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team earned a Region 15 victory over Dutchess Community College, 41-1, at Heritage Financial Park on Tuesday afternoon. The Express bump their undefeated Region 15 record to 12-0 (14-11 overall) and have won 14 of their last 16 games.

The 41 runs Monroe scored sets a program single-game record. The previous record was 32 runs the Express scored against Bronx Community College on April 23 at Ohio Field.

During Tuesday's contest against Dutchess, Monroe – Bronx scored three runs in each of the first two innings and then broke the game open with 16 in the third and 10 more in the fourth. After that, the Blue and Gold scored six times in the sixth and then added three more tallies in the seventh. The Falcons (0-10, 0-10 Region 15) scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth. 

The Express also set program single-game records for hits (30) and RBIs (37).

Robert Herrera highlighted Monroe's scoring in the first with a two-run inside-the-park home run. Pablo Aquino hit an inside-the-park grand slam during Monroe's productive third inning. Elijah Andino launched an inside-the-park round tripper in the top of the fourth.
 
On the mound for Monroe – Bronx, Jayden Moya started the game stuck out nine batters, while giving up just two hits, in five shutout innings pitched to earn his fourth victory of the season. Leonardo Martinez gave up an earned run while striking out three batters in an inning out of the bullpen. Justin Martinez closed it out with a scoreless frame and registered a strikeout in the process.  

At the plate for the Express during the afternoon, Robert Herrera went 5-for-7 with five runs scored and just as many runs batted in. Andino collected four hits, with two of them being extra base hits, while scoring five times and driving in three runs. Anthony Sanchez put up three hits, including a double, while scoring three runs and producing two RBIs. Yadiel Santana and Yan Ortiz Torres each went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, with the former lining a double and driving in four runs and the latter stealing three bases. Edwin Minaya Jr. drove in four runs and came around to score once.

Also helping Monroe were Juan Diaz and Jesus Guerrero who each tripled, doubled, scored twice, and added four RBIs. Joeliel Cruz collected two hits and came around to score four times. Aquino totaled two hits, five RBIs, two stolen bases, and a trio or runs scored. Yavier Velazquez singled twice, picked up a run batted in, and crossed home plate three times. Adrian Nunez singled, drove in two runs, and scored a duo of times. Christopher Marlin drove in two runs on a single and scored twice. Nomar Rodriguez walked and scored three times. Sael Flete picked up an RBI.

These two teams will continue the series with another single game at Heritage Financial Park on Thursday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
