WARWICK, R.I. - The Monroe University – Bronx Express softball team (6-29) dropped both games of a road doubleheader against nationally ranked No. 7 Community College of Rhode Island (17-5) on Saturday afternoon, falling 12-0 in Game 1 and 8-0 in Game 2. Both games were played at Winslow Field. CCRI claimed all four games against Monroe - Bronx in the 2025 regular season.
In Game 1, the Express were unable to gain momentum offensively, collecting just two hits in the contest—one each from Lauren Vuorinen and Genesis Matias. The Express had trouble containing CCRI's offense early, giving up eight runs in the second inning. Defensive miscues proved costly, as the team committed five errors behind starting pitcher Judaiah Gourdine and reliever Melissa Martinez. Despite solid contact in a few at-bats, Express couldn't find a way to drive in any runs.
In the second game of the day, the Express again struggled at the plate, falling 8-0 in another five-inning contest. Monroe tallied four hits—two from Alicia Negrillo and one apiece from Sonia Rosa and Vuorinen. However, the Express stranded runners and were unable to produce timely hits to bring anyone home. Darlene Peña Puente got the start and pitched one inning before turning things over to Jalyn Miner and Gourdine, who combined for the remaining innings. The trio gave up a total of five hits and eight runs (five earned), while the defense committed three errors.
The Express will look to bounce back in Region 15 play as they travel to Brentwood, N.Y., to face Suffolk County Community College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 22. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM, with the second game to follow at 5:00 PM.
