NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx softball team dropped a pair of games to NJCAA Division II Orange County Community College, 9-3 and 22-6, at Flowers Park on Tuesday afternoon.
In the opening game, the Colts (2-0) scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 advantage. Express (0-8) starting pitcher
Judaiah Gourdine settled in and tossed scoreless frames in the second, third, and the fourth.
During Gourdine's resurgence in the circle, Monroe's bats came to life as
Ciara Harriott drove in
Jaliyah Rosario from third on an RBI infield single in the bottom of the third to narrow the Blue and Gold's deficit to 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth, Monroe – Bronx had a runner on second and two outs.
Amandy Rodriguez stepped up to the plate lined a single to left to score
Genesis Matias to pull the Express to within one, at 3-2.
Orange County responded in the top of the fifth with two runs to inflate its lead to three.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Express got back on track as
Sonia Rosa singled to right center. She came around to score from first thanks to Matias lacing a two-out RBI double in the same area to narrow Monroe's deficit to 5-3.
Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, the Colts broke the game open in top of the seventh with four runs to pad their benefit to 9-3. That ended up being the final score.
For the Express, Matias went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Lauren Vuorinen drilled a triple. Rosario hit a single.
For Orange County, Gianna Catletti stuck out five batters and gave up just two earned runs in seven innings pitched to earn the complete-game victory. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 including a triple, drove in a pair of runs, drew a walk, and scored a run. Sydney Benware picked up two RBIs and had a hit, while Nicole Imhoff scored twice, singled, and worked two walks. Emily Ketcham went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk.
In Game 2, the Colts scored seven runs in the top of the first to take a commanding lead and never looked back. In fact, the Colts scored multiple runs every inning.
Monroe got a run back in the bottom of the first but were held scoreless until the fourth. In that frame, the Express scored three runs highlighted by an RBI single courtesy of both Matias and Rodriguez. In the bottom of the fifth, Gourdine drilled a two-run inside-the-park home run to left. It was not enough as Monroe fell for the second time during the day.
For the Blue and Gold,
Brendalie Oliviery-Baker singled and scored twice. Rosa tallied a one-base hit, picked up a run batted in, and scored. Matias crossed home plate.
Ren Reyes drew a walk and then came around to score. Vuorinen also earned a base on balls.
For Orange County, Catletti had another strong performance at the plate with two hits, three walks, and five runs scored. Madeline Roberts hit a solo inside-the-park home run, while Lindsay Keane drilled a two-run inside-the-park round tripper. The former had two hits, a pair of runs batted in, and scored twice, while the latter went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, three RBIs, and a walk. Hannah Moulton generated a hit, an RBI, three stolen bases, two walks, and three runs scored. Benware tallied a hit, drove in four runs, worked two walks, and crossed home plate twice. Ketchem went 2-for-4 including a two-run double, drove in three runs overall, scored twice, and worked a walk.
In the circle for the Colts, Benware earned a complete-game victory as she fanned nine Express hitters, while surrendering three earned runs, in five innings pitched.
Monroe – Bronx will face a big test on Thursday as the Express host nationally ranked No. 9 Brookdale Community College in a doubleheader. First pitch at Flowers Park is set for 3:00 p.m.
