SEWELL, N.J. – The Monroe University – Bronx baseball team opened the 2025 season with a loss to the reigning two-time National Champion and nationally ranked No. 1 Rowan College of South Jersey – Gloucester, 14-2, at RCSJ – Gloucester Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Express (0-1) got off to a good start in the top of the first as freshman
Robert Herrera led off the game with a walk, advanced to second, stole third, and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Express a 1-0 advantage. However, the Roadrunners (3-0) responded right away with seven runs in the bottom of the first, with three of them being scored on wild pitches, to take a commanding lead and never looked back.
Monroe trailed 10-1 in the top of the fifth, but they had runners on first and second with one out. Sophomore
Yan Ortiz Torres slapped a single to left field to score freshman
Elijah Andino from second. That's all Monroe got as the Roadrunners added four more runs before the end of the game to claim their third win of the season.
For Monroe – Bronx, sophomore
Giovanny Flores walked twice. Classmate
Christopher Marlin reached base with a single and a walk. Newcomer
Pablo Aquino made two hard-to-make putouts in center field and drew two walks for the Express. Andino also earned a base on balls.
On the mound, freshman Anthony Magliozzi was credited with the win in relief for the Roadrunners, striking out two batters in two innings pitched. For Monroe, sophomore
Jayden Moya pitched four innings out of the bullpen and struck out a pair of hitters.
The Express will be tested again on Wednesday, March 5, when they take on national ranked No. 21 Westchester Community College, an NJCAA Division II team, at Vikings Field. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
