THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Monroe University – Bronx women's volleyball team secured another Region 15 victory on Tuesday evening, this time defeating LaGuardia Community College in straight sets at Monsignor Scanlan Gym. The scores were 25-17, 25-19, and 25-17.
Monroe is now 5-1 in the region and (8-3 overall). It's the Blue and Gold's second victory against LaGuardia this year.
Gabriela De La Rosa had a big match for the Express with 10 kills, four aces, and two digs.
Cherlialix Carmona compiled eight kills and 14 digs.
Aleishka Diaz led all players with 23 digs, while scoring two service aces.
"Our group keeps finding ways to compete and stay consistent in key moments," Express Head Coach
Odaly Aponte-Orta said. "We'll look to bring that same energy and focus into Thursday's Pink Match as we play for something bigger than the game."
The Express earned a wire-to-wire victory in the opening set. During the second game, Monroe fell behind 4-3 but then rifled off nine out of the next 11 points to take a 12-6 benefit. LaGuardia (6-5, 5-5 Region 15) played from behind for the rest of the stanza and the Express went on to clinch their second game-victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Jennely Ortega got the Red Hawks off to a great start in the third set with four consecutive service aces to put LaGuardia up, 4-0. In fact, the Express put themselves in a 6-1 hole. Later in the set, Monroe trailed 11-8 but turned it around with a 12-2 run to catapult the Blue and Gold to a 20-13 advantage in a blink of an eye. The highlights during Monroe's set-changing blitz were two kills and a pair of aces from De La Rosa and two putdowns by
Robyn Eddy. Monroe never trailed again the rest of the night. With the Express having a match-point opportunity, Carmona slammed a kill to clinch the set and the regional win for Monroe.
Also helping the Express during the evening was Robyn who had seven kills.
Sarai Hernandez had a solid outing with four kills, five digs, three blocks, and two aces.
Julia Ramos added 19 assists and five digs, while
Kaileex Batista added 14 helpers, three aces, and two defensive bumps.
Ayleenee Lopez scored five kills and chipped in on defense with two digs.
Thursday night is a critical Region 15 showdown as Monroe hosts the defending regional champions, Nassau Community College. First serve at Monsignor Scanlan Gym is set for 7 p.m. It's Breast Cancer Awareness Night and fans are encouraged to wear pink at the match.
