Express Women's Volleyball Defeats The New School and Extends Winning Streak to Eight Matches

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx women's volleyball team earned its eighth consecutive victory on Tuesday evening by defeating The New School University in straight sets. Scores were 25-22, 25-12, and 25-20. The contest took place at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium.

Leading the way for Monroe (12-3) were both Cherlialix Carmona and Gabriela De La Rosa as they each tallied 10 kills and six digs. The latter scored five service aces, while the former notched a pair of service victories and produced a .533 hitting percentage. Aleishka Diaz had a strong match with 24 digs, four aces, and three assists. Julia Ramos just missed a double-double with 19 helpers and nine defensive bumps, while scoring a duo of aces.

"Our hitters and setters found great rhythm tonight," Express Head Coach Odaly Aponte-Orta said. "That connection and teamwork were key to finishing strong as we head toward the end of the regular season."

The first set was knotted at 15 but Monroe took over by going on a 7-1 run, highlighted by two kills from Robyn Eddy, to put the Blue and Gold in front, 22-16. The Narwhals (2-2) inched closer with a 6-1 run to shrink the Express' benefit to 23-22. However, a service error by The New School gave Monroe a set-point opportunity. Ayleenee Lopez took advantage by slamming a kill to clinch the opening set for the Express.

Monroe surged with a 14-3 run in the second set to jump out to a 23-8 hold. The Narwhals scored four of the next five points but then Carmona slammed the ball through the opposing defense to give the Express a two-set lead.

The Blue and Gold led from wire to wire in the third stanza. The New School managed to slice Monroe's advantage to 20-19, but then the Express finished strong with a 5-1 run, capped off by a kill courtesy of De La Rosa, to clinch the victory for Monroe in straight sets.

Eddy finished the evening with six kills, a .500 hitting percentage, and two blocks for the Blue and Gold. Kaileex Batista generated 10 assists, four aces, and three digs. Sarai Hernandez provided two putdowns, three aces, and a pair of digs. Yamelyn Bonilla added two kills and just as many blocks, while Lopez produced three successful attacks. Diamondnique Stephenson tallied a kill, a block assist, and a dig. Brycelynn Paul finished with two defensive bumps.

It will be a quick turnaround as Monroe – Bronx has a Region 15 road match against Queensborough Community College on Wednesday evening. First serve at RFK Gymnasium is set for 7:00 p.m.
