CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 8 Monroe University – Bronx women's volleyball team fell in two matches at the Finger Lakes Community College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Express dropped the first contest to the host team and nationally ranked No. 11 Finger Lakes, in straight sets, and then suffered a heart-breaking loss to Genesee Community College in five sets. Both contests took place at Putt Moore Gymnasium.

In the loss to Genesee (1-4), the Express (1-2) dropped the first two sets but stormed back to win the next two to force a fifth and deciding game. However, the Cougars narrowly won the match-deciding set, 15-13. Set scores in the match were 25-11, 25-14, 23-25, 21-25, and 13-15. This marked the second day in a row the Express forced a fifth set after dropping the first two games. This past Friday, Monroe defeated Broome in five sets after losing the first two.

In the opening set, Nolasco gave the Express an early 2-1 lead thanks to a kill. However, the Cougars scored the next five points to take a lead that lasted for the remainder of the set.

Outside of Monroe having a 1-0 advantage in the second frame, Genesee held the advantage during the entire stanza on its way to taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

Monroe trailed the third set 4-0, and then 10-7, but responded with three straight points to tie it up. Two of those three points came from kills courtesy of Nolasco. After the Cougars regained a two-point vantage, back-to-back kills by Nolasco and De La Rosa sparked four unanswered points for the Express to give the Blue and Gold a 14-12 benefit. Genesee countered with a 7-2 blitz to jump back in front, 19-16. Later in the set, with Monroe trailing 21-18, sophomore middle blocker Nisa Llanos slammed home a kill that sparked four unanswered points by the Express to catapult them in front, 22-21. The Cougars scored next to stay alive, but then committed a service error to clinch the third set for Monroe which allowed them to keep going in the contest.
