Express Men's Basketball Defeats Bronx CC to Maintain Second Place in Region 15 Standings

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Monroe College – Bronx men's basketball team continued its winning ways on Saturday afternoon as the Express defeated Bronx Community College, 76-62, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium. The Express extend their regional winning streak to five games and remain in second place in the Region 15 standings with a 9-4 record in the region and 15-9 overall. Bronx CC drops to 3-21 for the season and 2-14 against Region 15 opponents.

The Express never trailed at any point in the game. Early on with the contest tied at two, Monroe took control of the contest by scoring seven straight points, capped off by a fast-break layup from sophomore guard Jaream Eason to give the Blue and Gold the lead for good at 9-2, 4:39 into the contest.

Bronx CC scored five unanswered points to cut the Express' benefit to two, but then Monroe answered with eight unanswered points to pad its advantage to 17-7 with 11:40 remaining in the half. Sophomore forward Timothy Charles put a cap on Monroe's blitz by converting back-to-back layups.

Later in the opening half, sophomore forward Anthony Bannister successfully executed a layup attempt to close out a 6-0 Monroe run to put the home team up 30-15 with 4:54 left before the break. That rally put the home team up by double digits all the way until the late stages of the second half when Bronx CC pulled to within nine with 1:54 left to play in regulation. Sophomore guard Derrick Simpson prevented the Broncos from getting closer by hitting two key free throws with 1:24 remaining to put Monroe up by double figures for good. The Express went on to earn the convincing Region 15 victory, 76-62.

Leading the way for the Express during the afternoon was sophomore guard Jovan Young who scored a game-high 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the floor, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out two assists. Sophomore forward Abubakar Kromah snatched a team-high 13 rebounds, while scoring six points, and delivering three assists.
