Express Women's Volleyball Defeats Kingsborough For Fourth Straight Region 15 Win

BROOKLYN - The Monroe University – Bronx women's volleyball team secured its fourth consecutive Region 15 victory on Wednesday evening by defeating Kingsborough Community College in straight sets. Set scores were 25-19, 25-20, and 25-14.
 
The Express are now 10-2 in the region and 14-5 overall. The Wave fall to 3-12 in the region and 5-13 for the season.
 
Monroe led from wire-to-wire in the opening set, starting with an 8-0 lead, on its to a 25-19 win. 
 
The second set was a different story as Kingsborough jumped ahead 15-11. The Express turned it around by going on a 7-1 run, highlighted by two kills from freshman outside hitter Aleishka Diaz and a pair of service aces from sophomore libero Yasmel Molina, to propel the Blue and Gold to an 18-16 advantage. Monroe never trailed again for the remainder of the stanza, securing the set by a score of 25-20 to go up 2-0 in the match.
 
The Express once again got off to a slow start in the third frame, falling behind 9-7. Monroe once again snatched the momentum by scoring eight straight points, concluded by back-to-back service aces courtesy of sophomore setter Serena Bueno, to take a commanding 15-9 benefit. After being up 17-14, Monroe finished the match strong by scoring eight straight points, capped by three service aces in a row from freshman setter Julia Ramos, to clinch the regional win for the Express. 
 
For Monroe during the evening, freshman outside hitter Gabriela De La Rosa finished with 10 kills, seven digs, and a pair of aces. Diaz provided six put downs, 12 digs, and a trio of aces. Sophomore middle blocker Chelsea Nolasco slammed home eight kills, while classmate Princess Corona added seven kills of her own. Ramos scored a match-high six service aces and added 11 assists with three digs. Bueno generated 21 assists, two digs, and just as many service aces. Sophomore middle blocker Nisa Llanos had four successful attacks, while freshman outside hitter Diamondnique Stephenson tallied three digs. Molina notched seven digs, four aces, and two assists.
 
For Kingsborough, freshman outside hitter Solandra Arizaga produced five kills and just as many digs. Rookie libero Joycelyn Toxqui produced a team-high nine digs with a pair of kills.
 
Monroe – Bronx will close out the regular season with a pair of Region 15 matches at Falcon Gymnasium, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon. Monroe will take on Orange County Community College at noon and then battle host-Dutchess at 2:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe University marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
