No. 7 Express Men's Soccer Strikes Early to Earn Region 15 Win Over Kingsborough

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 7 Monroe University – Bronx men's soccer team continued to roll in Region 15 play on Tuesday afternoon by defeating Kingsborough Community College, 4-1, at Flowers Park. The first-place Express are now 7-1-0 in the region and 8-1-0 overall. The Wave fall to 6-3-2 for the season and 4-3-2 in Region 15 play.

The Express got off to a quick start by scoring the first two goals during the first 3:40 of the contest to take the lead for good.

Sophomore forward Chrismonor Eugene tallied the opening goal for the Express courtesy of a penalty kick, as Monroe took advantage of Kingsborough committing a foul inside the box. It marked the first of two goals for Eugene during the afternoon.

The second Express tally during the beginning stages of the match was produced by freshman midfielder Xcaret Gonzalez. Eugene lined a pass to him from the right wing and then Gonzalez immediately rifled the ball into the cage from the center spot, 15 yards out, to extend Monroe's lead to 2-0. It was Eugene's first of two assists during the contest.

Thanks to his six-point performance, Eugene now has 10 goals and nine assists in nine matches played this season. He is now No. 1 on the program's all-time single-season assists list, surpassing James Gallagher ('24) and current Express Assistant Coach Andres Lora ('22) who each had seven assists in 2023 and 2021, respectively.

Despite the quick start by the Express, they were held scoreless for the remainder of the period. Fortunately for the Blue and Gold, Monroe's defense stifled Kingsborough as the opposing team only mustered up one shot on goal during the first 45 minutes of the match. The Express went into the break with a 2-0 benefit.

"We started off very well," Express Head Men's Soccer Coach Jose Hernandez said. "As I told the guys, 'We must go out on the field with a lot of intensity and aggressiveness to have control of the game', and that's exactly what they did."

Just over 11 minutes into the second half, Eugene struck again by forcing a turnover and then rifling the ball past the diving goalkeeper from 10 yards out to extend the Express' lead to 3-0.

Kingsborough did not go down quietly as freshman Isaiah Rosales received a through pass from classmate Maksym Cholovsksky and drilled the ball into the net to pull the Wave to within two with 15:24 left to play.

The Express were able to get a key insurance goal in the 86th minute thanks to freshman midfielder Juan Ramirez receiving a cross from Eugene and knocking in his seventh goal of the year to make it 4-1 in favor of Monroe. That ended up being the final score.

For the afternoon, the Express dominated in shots, 22-8, and shots on goal, 12-3. Monroe also took most of the corner kicks, 7-2.

In net, freshman goalkeeper Raymond Romero made a save and got the win to advance his record to 4-0-0 for the season. Sophomore netminder Lincoln Henwood stopped one shot for the Express in relief.

"It was great for us to continue with the good performance which we started the game with," Hernandez said. "We are already thinking about Thursday's game which is very fundamental to stay up in the standings."

For Kingsborough, sophomore goalkeeper Giovanni Carreno made eight saves.

It will be a key Region 15 showdown with national implications on Thursday afternoon as nationally ranked No. 7 Monroe will take on nationally ranked No. 10 Westchester Community College. The action at Barrett Field will begin at 4:00 p.m.
