No. 15 Express Women's Basketball Suffers Setback Against No. 13 Hostos in Region 15 Play

BRONX – In a battle of two nationally ranked teams, the No. 15 Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team fell to No. 13 Hostos Community College by an 82-47 score, in Region 15 play, at The Swamp on Thursday, January 18.
 
The Caimans (11-3, 9-1 Region 15) jumped out to a 7-0 advantage and never looked back. Monroe – Bronx (9-7, 6-2 Region 15) played its best in the second quarter as they chipped away at Hostos' lead. Sophomore forward Xing Stewart-Greer grabbed an offensive rebound and executed a putback layup to narrow the Express' deficit to 22-17 with 5:59 left before halftime. After Monroe deepened its deficit to eight, freshman guard Angeleny Cobos converted a fast-break layup to shrink the opposition's lead to 27-21 with 4:29 to go.
 
From that point on, Hostos took over the contest by scoring 10 unanswered points, in a span of 2:21, to take a commanding 37-21 hold. Both teams went into the locker rooms with the Caimans leading by a score of 39-26.
 
It was all Hostos in the second half as they went up by as many as 37 before securing the Region 15 victory.
 
Leading the way for the Express during the evening was freshman guard Daysiah Smith who scored 13 points, dished out five assists, and forced a pair of steals. Rookie guard Jah Gunter added 10 points, five steals, and a trio of rebounds. Stewart-Greer brought down a team-high 13 rebounds and collected two steals, while rookie guard Tymere Moorer provided seven points and eight rebounds. 
 
Freshman guard Davian Myers gathered seven caroms and had three steals for the Express. Rookie guard Tiffany Newsome tallied seven boards and two steals, while classmate Leanna Morales had a solid game with five points, just as many rebounds, four steals, and an assist.
 
For the Caimans, four players scored in double figures. Sophomore guard Jae'oni Davis had a near double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds, and added six steals and three assists. Second-year forward Demaris Andrews also had a strong game with 17 points, nine rebounds, three helpers, and two steals.
 
Monroe – Bronx will conclude its three-game Region 15 road trip with a battle against LaGuardia Community College on Saturday, January 20. Tipoff in Long Island City, N.Y. is set for 12:00 p.m. 

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
