The Monroe College Express traveled down to Edison, New Jersey, to take on the NJCAA DIII #10 Middlesex CC Colts on Wednesday. The Express won in extras in an offensive showdown.
The Express got the bats started right away, scoring 5 runs in the top of the first. After loading the bases with the first three batters of the game, Camillo Rodriguez drove in the first run with an RBI groundout. Ian Faulkner followed with a 2-RBI single, and then Gregory Espinal roped an RBI double to left field. Espinal later scored on a fielder's choice, making it a 5-0 game.
After back-to-back hits in the top of the second, Camillo Rodriguez cleared the bases with a two-run double, giving the Express a 7-0 lead in the first two innings of play. The Colts scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a two-run double from Braden Ramirez.
The Express would pad their lead over the next two innings, highlighted by a Jose Zabala Rodriguez home run in the top of the third and Camillo Rodriguez's fourth RBI of the contest in the top of the fourth.
The Colts would battle back to tie the game over the next three frames, making it an 11-11 game heading into the top of the ninth inning.
The Express took a 13-11 lead in the ninth after Ramsel Jerez scored on an error, and Hecxiel Perez drove in his second run of the game with an RBI single to left field. However, down to their final out, Giovanni Aresta hit a game-tying two-run home run for the Colts, sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the tenth, the Express took a 16-13 lead after a few Colts' miscues in the field. The Colts put up a fight in the bottom of the tenth, making it 16-15 before Jerez hauled in a pop-up to shortstop for the final out of the game.
Didier Hernandez got the win for The Express, pitching the final two innings of the contest. Offensively, the Express were led by Ernie Farrell's 5 hits and Rodriguez and Faulkner's 4 RBIs. Farrell and Jerez also combined to score 9 of the Express' 16 runs on the day.
With the win, the Express improve to 25-18, setting a program record for wins in a single season. Up next for the Express is a 4 game series with Borough of Manhattan CC, starting with a home doubleheader on Friday May 5th.
