Express Fall Behind Morris in Home Opener

The Express hit the road Thursday (Mar. 30) for a non-conference bout against Mercer

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – In their long awaited home opener, Monroe Express softball hosted the County College of Morris Titans for a pair of games Tuesday afternoon in pursuit of their first victories of the young season. In the doubleheader, the Express ultimately dropped both matchups, 13-0 in game one and 14-2 in game two. The Express fall to 0-4 with the losses.

Morris Titans 13, Monroe Express 0

Monroe fell behind early and couldn't come back in the 13-0 loss to the Morris Titans in their first of two meetings Tuesday afternoon. The Titans took the lead in the first inning, after an 8-0 spurt including a double by Julie Vervaet.
In the first inning, Morris got their offense started when Vervaet doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run. Some time later, a single by Thiare Sanchez in the fourth inning was a positive for the Express in the effort. Ultimately, the Express struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Morris, giving up 13 runs across five innings.

Vervaet got the win for the Titans, as the pitcher allowed one hit and zero runs over five innings, striking out 14.

Hilda Sanchez was in the pitcher's circle for Monroe going five innings, allowing 13 runs on 12 hits and striking out one. Sanchez went 1-for-2 at the plate to lead the Express in hits.

Dutchess Community College tallied 12 hits in the game, led by Christie Puglis with three hits in four at bats. Dutchess Community College was adept in the field and didn't commit a single error. Enger had the most chances in the field with 14 and Emily Andrade led Morris with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with five stolen bases.

In game two of the home opener, the Express watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 14-2 setback. The Titans got things moving in the first inning, when an error scored one run for them. Following this, Morris put their foot down scoring on a walk by Kelly Sesnick and Morgan Levin, an passed ball during Errante's time as batter, a double by Amber Curtis, a passed ball during M Paseler's at bat, and a home run by Puglis, all in the first inning. The Express struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing the Titans, giving up 14 runs in total.

Sesnick was credited with the victory for Morris, surrendering two runs on four hits over five innings, striking out six and walking zero.

Emily Velez took the loss for Monroe, where the hurler allowed five runs on zero hits.  Angelica Uribe threw five innings in relief out of the bullpen.

The Express smacked one home run on the day, credited to Adalianys Guzman who put one out in the second inning. Hilda Sanchez, Ashley Peralta, Guzman, Velez each collected one hit to lead the blue and gold. County College of Morris tallied nine hits on the day, and didn't commit a single error in the field. 

The Express will hit the road Thursday (Mar. 30) for a brief road trip, before returning to Flowers Saturday, for a two game series against the Mercer County Community College Vikings inside Mercer Softball Stadium in Trenton, NJ. First pitch is scheduled for 3 PM.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
