Smith's Game-High Scoring Not Enough for No. 11 Express Women's Basketball Against NJCAA Division II CCBC - Catonsville

CATONSVILLE, Md. – The nationally ranked No. 11 Monroe College – Bronx women's basketball team concluded its two-game Maryland trip with a loss to NJCAA Division II Community College of Baltimore County – Catonsville by a score of 79-40, at Jack Manley Wellness and Athletic Center on Sunday, November 19.
 
Leading the way for the Express (2-4) was rookie guard Daysiah Smith who scored a game-high 17 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out two assists. She went 4-for-7 from beyond the arc during the game. Second-year forward Kristina Poitier-Wells generated six points and seven boards. Freshman guard Tiffany Newsome tallied eight points, clutched a pair of caroms, and collected just as many steals. First-year guard Angeleny Cobos netted three points and had a duo of assists. 
 
Sophomore guard Kuari Green added two points, four boards, and three steals for Monroe. Rookie guard Leanna Morales added two points, a pair of caroms, and just as many helpers. Freshman guard Davian Myers secured five boards, while classmate Tymere Moorer added two rebounds of her own. Freshman guard Jah Gunter provided two points and an assist.
 
The Express struck first in the game as Smith took a feed from Poitier-Wells and buried a triple to give Monroe a 3-0 advantage, 39 ticks into the contest. However, the Cardinals (5-2) countered with nine straight points to jump out in front for good. Cobos disrupted the opposition's momentum by catching a pass from Smith and then draining a 3-point field goal to slice the Express' defect to 9-6, with 5:35 remaining in the opening quarter. However, CCBC – Catonsville finished the opening period with 10 straight points to take a commanding 19-6 hold after 10 minutes of play. 
 
The Cardinals pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Express by a 16-9 margin during the frame, to take a 35-15 benefit into the intermission. 
 
Monroe – Bronx showed signs of a rally in the third quarter, as Smith buried two free throws to shrink their deficit to 42-25, with 5:27 remaining in the period. However, the Cardinals scored the next eight points to go back up by 25. Smith continued to propel Monroe to a comeback attempt as she drilled a 3-point basket to decrease CCBC – Catonsville's lead to 50-28 with 2:40 remaining in the stanza. The home team countered by scoring the final six points of the quarter to inflate its advantage to 56-28 after 30 minutes of play. 
 
In the final period of regulation play, CCBC – Catonsville outscored Monroe, 23-12, on its way to the victory. 
 
For the Cardinals, sophomore forward Jocelyn Fogle had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Second-year guard Kayla Cabbagestalk also had 15 points, while adding five rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Sophomore guard Tenea Robinson had 13 points, nine rebounds, three helpers, and just as many steals. Freshman forward Niyah McCray had a double-double of her own with 10 points and 11 rebounds. 
 
Monroe heads home and will take on Dutchess Community College in a key Region 15 game. The action takes place on Tuesday, November 21, at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
