No. 4 Express Women's Volleyball Tops Kingsborough in Region 15 Quarterfinal Match

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 4 and top-seeded Monroe College – Bronx women's volleyball team earned a convincing victory in its Region 15 Quarterfinal match over No. 8-seed Kingsborough Community College in straight sets, at the Monroe Athletic Complex, on Thursday, October 26. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21, and 25-13.

As a result, the Express will compete in the Region 15 Semifinals against fourth-seeded Orange County Community College, on the campus of Rockland Community College, on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. The winner of that match will take on the winner of the other semifinal match, No. 3-seed Queensborough Community College vs. No. 2-seed Dutchess Community College, in the regional championship match later in the day.

Leading the way for the Express (20-1) during their victory over Kingsborough (9-13) was sophomore outside hitter Selena Mitchell who had a match-high 12 points, knocked down nine kills, added three digs, and nailed a pair of service aces. Second-year outside hitter Lisanel Rodriguez tallied nine kills and six digs. Rookie middle blocker Nisa Llanos added eight put downs of her own. Sophomore setter Luisanni Rodriguez had a strong match with 29 assists, nine digs, and four service aces. Sophomore libero Valery Nunez anchored the defense with a match-high 11 digs.

Monroe – Bronx led from wire-to-wire in each of the first two sets and did not trail at any point in the match. In the third game, the Wave managed to score two straight points to tie the stanza at two points apiece. However, the Express responded with a 9-1 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from Llanos, that gave the Blue and Gold a commanding 11-3 hold. Kingsborough could not generate a consistent run to get back into the set as Monroe – Bronx went on to win the third stanza to clinch the quarterfinal match and earn a berth in the semifinal round. It also marks the 16th straight win for the Express.

For Monroe, sophomore right side hitter Lesly Almonte produced four kills and nine digs. Freshman middle blocker Chelsea Nolasco generated four kills and three digs, while sophomore middle blocker Xing Stewart-Greer scored five kills. Sophomore defensive specialist Laura Pinales had three service aces and just as many digs, while second-year outside hitter Haley Castaneda added three digs of her own. Rookie libero Yasmel Molina chipped in on defense with four digs.
