No. 8 Express Women's Volleyball Tops Both BMCC and FIT in Region 15 Action

NEW YORK – The nationally ranked No. 8 Monroe College – Bronx women's volleyball team picked up two more Region 15 victories, on Saturday, October 14, by defeating Borough of Manhattan Community College and Fashion Institute of Technology in straight sets. The two matches took place at BMCC Gymnasium. Monroe - Bronx honored and celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month during the two matches.
 
The Express advance their record to 15-1 overall and an unblemished record of 10-0 against Region 15 competition.
 
In the victory over the Panthers (3-10, 3-7 Region 15), set scores were 25-13, 25-18, and 25-8.
 
Leading the way for Monroe in that match was sophomore outside hitter Luisanni Rodriguez who slammed home five kills, chipped in on defense with nine digs, provided a match-high 25 assists, scored three service aces, and added a block. Classmate Lisanel Rodriguez also had a productive match with eight service aces, six kills, and nine digs.
 
Sophomore libero Valery Nunez led the way defensively for Monroe with 16 digs, while recording two assists on the offensive side. Second-year outside hitter Selena Mitchell generated three kills, just as many digs, and four service aces. 
 
In the Blue and Gold's win against FIT (9-8, 7-4 Region 15) set scores were 25-19, 25-18, and 25-21.
 
Lisanel Rodriguez tallied a double-double with 14 kills and 19 digs, while scoring three service aces. Nunez produced 32 digs, while providing a pair of aces and just as many helpers. 
 
Luisanni Rodriguez had a match-high 31 assists, while adding three kills, just as many blocks, a duo of service aces, and a pair of digs. Freshman middle blocker Nisa Llanos slammed home seven kills, while second-year middle blocker Xing Stewart-Greer added four put downs of her own.
 
Freshman middle blocker Chelsea Nolasco had six kills, while sophomore outside hitter Laura Pinales had a strong match defensively with seven digs. Rookie setter Serena Bueno had eight assists and two digs, while rookie defensive specialist Yasmel Molina had six bumps on defense. 
 
Second-year right side hitter Lesly Almonte tallied two kills and five digs. Sophomores Shirley Garo and Haley Castaneda each scored two kills, while Mitchell had three successful attacks. Rookie middle blocker Maria Melendez added a kill and a dig.
 
Monroe – Bronx will return to its home court at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium on Tuesday, October 17, for a Region 15 match against Nassau Community College. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. It will be a special night as the Express women's volleyball team will be hosting Breast Cancer Awareness Night and will be donning "Monroe Express Spikes Breast Cancer" t-shirts during warmups. 

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 31 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
