BRONX, NY – The Monroe College Express women's volleyball opened their season Saturday afternoon with a tri-match against the Passaic County Community College Panthers and the hosting Hostos Community College Caimans inside The Swamp. Monroe exited their Bronx rival's gym shutting out both Passaic (3-0, 25-11, 25-13, 25-15) and Hostos (3-0, 25-14, 25-19, 25-8).
Monroe 3, Passaic 0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-15)
Against Passaic, Monroe attacked at a rate of .364 percent, totaling 32 kills on 55 swings in the contest. The Express shared the ball exceptionally well registering 24 assists, 21 digs while only committing 12 errors. Soumayatou Yaogo knocked down a game-high 10 kills, with Lisanel Rodriguez adding in nine kills, five service aces, seven digs and a solo block. Luisanni Rodriguez added in a game-high 22 assists, five aces and a block. Valery Nunez pitched in nine digs.
Monroe 3, Hostos 0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-8)
After dominating their first match, Monroe continued their red-hot play, not relinquishing a set to the host Caimans. In game two, the team registered a .364 person attacking clip, with 25 kills on 44 attempts. In addition, the victors tallied 32 digs, 23 assists and only nine errors. Lisanel Rodriguez led the way for the Express with 16 points, nine kills, six service aces, four digs, and a block. Luisanni Rodriguez followed her game one performance with 20 assists, three kills and two digs. Valery Nunez and
Angelique Reyes added 10 digs and seven digs respectively. The Express rode these performances to the end, shutting out both opponents on the afternoon.
The Express (2-0, 1-0 Region XV) return to the court Sept. 6th in a Region XV stint against the Bronx Community College Broncos (0-1, 0-1 Region XV) inside Alumni Gym at 7:00 PM.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
