Monroe Express Baseball Drops Series Opener to Nassau

BRONX, N.Y., April 12, 2022 – The beginning of a four-game Region 15 series with Nassau Community College saw the Monroe College Express baseball team drop a 10-3 decision to the Lions Tuesday afternoon at Roberto Clemente State Park. The Express fall to 10-14 overall and an even 6-6 in region play, while Nassau improves to 7-5 and 6-3.

The Express fell into an early hole in Tuesday's contest. Nassau had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the first for Anthony Lamar, who doubled to left to bring in two runs. However, Dylan Strang tried to score from first, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning with the Lions on top, 2-0.

The Express then chipped away at the two-run deficit in their first at-bats of the game. With two outs, Salomon Lluveres singled to left, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ernie Farrell beat out an infield single to put runners on first and third, and then Joseph Rosario doubled to right, scoring Lluveres to make it a 2-1 ballgame.

Nassau added to its lead in the second. With the bases loaded with two outs once again, Lucas Rubenstein doubled to clear the bases, putting the Lions ahead, 5-1.

Randy Diaz hit a one-out single in the bottom of the second for Monroe, and then Arrieta singled to get two runners on. With two outs, Lluveres hit an RBI single, scoring Diaz to make it a 5-2 game, but Arrieta was thrown out at the plate trying to score to end the inning.

The Express got a bit closer in the fifth when Rosario homered to center, making it a 5-3 ballgame. Unfortunately, that was the end of Monroe's scoring for the game, as the Lions scored five more runs the rest of the way for a 10-3 win.

Nassau reliever Nick Kozerski picked up the win with 4.1 frames of work in relief to improve to 1-0. Chris Dominguez shouldered the loss for Monroe to drop to 1-4.

Rosario finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and a run scored in the game. Diaz batted 2-for-2 with a run. Lluveres knocked in a run and scored another in a 2-for-4 effort. Farrell also went 2-for-4 with a double. Jose Ramirez went 1-for-2 in the game, while Arrieta batted 1-for-3.

Before continuing with the final three games of the series with Nassau later the week, the Express takes a detour to Middletown, N.Y. on Wednesday, April 13, to take on Orange County Community College. The game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
