All Sophomores Contribute To Dominant Victory Over Rival Bronx Community College On Sophomore Day

New Rochelle, NY, February 12, 2021 – The Monroe Express women's basketball team class of 2022 made Sophomore day one to the remember for four players on the cusp of graduation. The Express sent Tariah Bryant (Brooklyn, New York), Ramatoulaye Diallo (Brooklyn, New York), Mariame Gueye (Harlem, New York), and Kryshana Levy (Bronx, New York) off well with a dominant 62-39 victory over rival Bronx Community College on Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex.

Monroe Bronx extended their winning streak to five, improving to 18-7 overall (6-0 Region XV), while Bronx Community College fell to 1-8 (1-5 Region XV). The Express have locked up the #1 seed in Region 15 and made it their second sweep of a Bronx foe this season.

It was only appropriate that coach Jeremy Thompson inserted all four of his sophomores in today's starting five. The sophomore foursome tallied a combined 29 points over the course of the afternoon.

Freshman Maria Negron (Bronx, New York) put up her second straight 20 rebound game bringing down 23 rebounds, which was one shy of her single-season record on Tuesday against Nassau Community College while also recording a career-high five blocks. Classmate Nyeira Spady (New Rochelle, New York) scored a team-high 12 points missing her team-leading eighth double-double by one rebound with nine. Bryant snagged a game-high seven steals and dished out a game-best five assists while scoring nine points. Spady and Shashauna Ballantyne (Brooklyn, New York) also had six steals each, and Diallo added nine points and four rebounds and steals. Gueye and Levy added six and five points, respectively, and both grasped four rebounds apiece.

Monroe-Bronx held their opponents to 18.8% shooting from the field (13-for-69) while dominating the glass outrebounding Bronx Community College 69-46. The 69 rebounds were a season-high for the Express and their second straight game with 60 or more boards and their fourth this season. Monroe-Bronx also forced 31 turnovers and scored 36 points off of them while outscoring the Broncos 36-16 in the Paint and got 21 bench points.

The Express jumped all over their Bronx rival from the opening tip scoring the first seven points of the game and building their lead to 15, 21-6 on a Taina Maldonado (New York, New York) layup with 52 seconds left and finishing the first quarter up 23-10. Monroe-Bronx held the Broncos to eight second-quarter points taking a comfortable 45-18 lead into the halftime break.

The second half was more of the same as the Express built their lead to its largest of the afternoon, 33, on a Gueye three-pointer at 8:50 mark of the third quarter and kept their 30-point lead going into the final stanza, 58-28 and coasting to 62-39 victory.

Shawnasia Ofaire led Bronx Community College in four categories on the afternoon with a game-high 18 points to go along with a team-high 19 rebounds, six steals, and three assists.

The Express are riding a five-game winning streak and will look to keep it up in their season finale at home on February 15 against Regional opponent Nassau Community College. For more information, please visit the Monroe Express Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
