KEYSER, WV – Monroe Express women's basketball had a strong third quarter against the Potomac State College of WVU Catamounts in Saturday afternoon's matinee, defeating the home team 69-62 after four quarters. The Express' record improves to 9-3 with the victory, and the Catamounts fall to 3-6.
The Catamounts were able to strike first early, after Kelly Ours drained a 3-pointer after an
Aleah James miscue. Nyeira SpadYÂ found the bottom of the basket after she drilled a longball to even the count. Ours answered with another 3-point field goal, and both teams traded baskets for the next three minutes of action before Potomac State went on to gain a narrow four point edge to end the first. After an
Anastasia Davis foul, where Chelcie Forrester split her free throws, the Express went on an 11-2 run over the next six minutes where
Janay Legagneur scored three buckets in the same span, to take a 23-22 lead. Forrester answered with a layup to knot the game 24 apiece at the 2:42 mark, but a quick five point burst gave the Express the lead at 29-24 before an Ours 3-pointer put the lead to only two going into the halftime break. Monroe held the Catamounts to just eight points in the period.
Like the first, the Catamounts drew first in the third off a Kelsey O'Neal layup that tied the game, before a James and Legagneur 3-pointer extended the lead to six. At the seven minute mark, James knocked down another jump shot from downtown, followed by a layup to give the Express their first double-digit lead of the game at 11. Potomac State attempted to chip away at their deficit, but quickly found themselves down by 17 points, over the span of the next seven minutes. The lead would grow to as much as 19, but a 14-7 Catamounts run over the final 9 minutes of action would bring them within five, but two clutch free throws by
Sierra Jones sealed the victory for the Express at 69-62.
Legagneur lead all scorers with 19 points,Â
Ariella Johnson followed with 14 points and James added 13 points.Â
The Express return to action Sunday (Dec. 17) for a non-conference battle against the Garrett College Lakers in McHenry, MD inside CARC Gymnasium at 1 PM.
