CCBC Essex Hands Monroe Express Women's Basketball Their First Loss Of The Season, 79-42, At Home

New Rochelle, N.Y., December, 10 2021 –  The Monroe Express women's basketball team lost for the first time this season to CCBC Essex, 79-42, at home Friday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Express's program-record start ends with their record falling to 9-1 while the Knights remain perfect at 10-0 with the victory.

Freshman Zyane Rowe Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) came off the bench to lead the Express's offensive effort, with a team-high 19 points, with 14 of them coming in the first half. Classmates Nyeira Spady (New Rochelle, New York) and Tariah Bryant (Brooklyn, New York) grabbed six rebounds and distributed two assists, tying a team-best. Spady also chipped in with eight points on the evening.

CCBC Essex recorded six of the first seven points of the first quarter, then the Express responded with a 6-1 run of their own to cut the deficit down to one, 7-6 on a three-pointer by Ramirez at the 6:20 mark. However, the Knights would take control from there using a 15-0 run to stretch the lead to 12, 22-6 at 1:31 on a Patricia Anumgba layup, closing the first with a 25-8 lead.

Monroe-Bronx battled back in a second-quarter outscoring CCBC Essex 18-16 and trimming the Knight lead down to 11, 32-21 on a fastbreak layin by Ramirez. However, CCBC Essex pulled away after building their lead to its largest of the night, 41, 77-36 in the fourth quarter at the 5:47 mark and rode that to victory 79-42. 

For CCBC Essex, Patricia Anumgba led the Knights in four statistical categories posting a double-double with a game-high 35 points, 20 of them in the first half and 10 rebounds while also grabbing six steals distributing three assists also game-bests. Jaelyn Swann contributed with 15 points, and Vanessa Woodfolk had 13 points to go along with a game-high tied two blocks.

The Express will look to rebound next week as they begin the first of a four-game road trip, the first of a three-game Maryland road trip on Friday, December 17 at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland Jenkins Gym at 3 p.m. For more information, visit the Monroe Express Women's Basketball Schedule Page.


ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 36 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports program, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
