Groten, C.T, November 13, 2021 – The Monroe Express women's basketball made program history on Saturday afternoon, utilizing a dominating defensive performance to roll past UCONN Avery Point, 66-32, in Croton, Connecticut. With the win, the Express improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season while UCONN Avery Point falls to 1-2.
Two Express players finished in double figures, with freshman Nyeira Spady (New Rochelle, New York) dropping a game-high and career-best 17 points to lead the Express offense, while classmate Tariah Bryant (Brooklyn, New York) chipped in with 10 points. Spady also hauled down a team-high eight rebounds while Bryant and Zyane Rowe Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) dished out a team-best tied five assists each. Ramirez also snatched a team-high five steals.
The Express's aggressive defense gave UCONN Avery Point fits all afternoon as they held them to 21.1% from the field (7-33 FG). Monroe-Bronx also dominated in the paint, outscoring UCONN Avery Point 48-12 and scoring 30 points off of turnovers while controlling the rebounding advantage 45-41.
Monroe-Bronx came out swinging from the opening tip scoring seven of the game's first nine points before building their lead up to 11, 15-4 on Ramirez layup off of a steal at 3:55. However, UCONN Avery Point roared back with a 10-0 run to get the deficit down to one, 15-14, with 25 seconds left before Bryant sank a jumper with 16 seconds left to give the Express a 17-14 lead after the first quarter.
Monroe-Bronx took control of the game from here on out in the second quarter, opening up on a 15-2 run capped off by a Bryant steal and layin at 4:35 to give the Express their largest lead of the afternoon 16, 32-16 and going into halftime up 37-22.
The second half was more of the same, with The Express building their lead to 31, 63-32 at the 9:36 mark of the fourth quarter. The Express were leading 66-32 at the 8:23 mark of the fourth quarter when a power outage forced the officials to call the game. After a ruling, that final would stand.
For UConn Avery Point, Trinity Angel was the top scorer with a team-high 11 points and grabbed a team-best nine boards. Francesca Foster registered a team-best four assists and three steals.
