Late Game Layup Sinks Monroe Express Men’s Basketball Comeback Attempt, 71-70, On The Road

BAYSIDE, N.Y., November 11, 2021 – The Monroe Express men's basketball team's road and Region XV opener on Thursday night followed a different narrative than the one that produced an offensive explosion in their season opener. After a slow start, the Express elevated their game in the second half to erase deficits of seven and six to lead by three with less than a minute remaining, but Khari Ojeda-Harvey's game-winning layup with 6.7 seconds left lifted Queensborough Community College to a 70-69 victory at RFK Gymnasium. With the loss, the Express dropped to 1-1 (0-1 Region XV), while the Tiger's third straight victory improved their record to 3-1 (3-1 Region XV).

Monroe-Bronx had two chances to win it in regulation, but Isaiah Stone (Baldwin, New York) missed a three-pointer, and Jaiden Simon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) couldn't convert on the follow as time expired, allowing the Tigers to escape with a one-point win.

Freshman Jabnel Cordero (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) spearheaded the Express offense with a career-high 21 points and four three-pointers while Stone recorded his second straight double-double on the season, with a game-high 18 rebounds and 19 points. Underclassman Onterio Miller (Bronx, New York) added eight pointsIssac Johnson (Bronx, New York) grabbed 14 rebounds, and Jasigha Barnes (Baldwin, New York) dished out a game and career-best eight assists while both also scored seven points apiece.

Queensborough Community College had three players score in double figures, and two hit the twenty-point plateau, with Rohan Singh leading the way with a game-high 25 points and four steals. Ojeda-Harvey registered 23 points and dished out a team-high five assists, while Preston Harts chipped in with 15 points. Zacharie Nyanid also swatted away a game-best five blocks.

The Express will look to go back over .500 when they host nationally-ranked No. 14 Hostos Community College this Tuesday, November 16, at 8 p.m. at Monroe Athletic Complex. For more information, please visit the Monroe Express Men's Schedule Page.
