West Hartford, Conn., March 11, 2020 — The Monroe College Express baseball team dropped a hard fought 12-8 decision to UConn Avery Point in non-conference action on Wednesday.
The Express took an early lead in the contest, putting up one run in the opening inning when Joseph Rosario singled to second base, scoring Juan Jorge from second.
The Pointers answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Bogan drove in Yokoi for the first run on an RBI single to left center. Bogan reached home next on Nunes' RBI base hit to take a 2-1 lead.
The Express tied the game in the top of the second. Gerardo Molina scored the tying run on Jalfani Cruz's RBI single.
UConn Avery Point responded once again, tallying a pair of runs in the bottom the second. An RBI groundout by Plasky and a sacrifice fly ball from Panzo gave the Pointers a 4-2 lead.
After a scoreless third inning, the Express scored one run in the fourth when Jorge single home Molina on a base hit to right field.
UConn Avery point rallied to score four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to hold an 8-3 lead through four innings of play. A four-run fifth inning helped the Pointers extend their advantage to 12-3.
In the sixth inning, the Express added a pair of runs on a two-run single by Jose Holguin, scoring Ronald David Rodriguez and Jose Santana Lebron.
After holding off the Pointers in the bottom of the sixth, the Express scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Ludwin Gonzalez led off the inning reaching first on a walk. Rey Rodriguez plated Gonzalez on an RBI two-base hit to right field. After a walk by Adrian Rivera-Silva, Ranssel Pinedo batted in Rodriguez on an RBI single to center field. Lebron tallied the final run for Monroe, scoring Riera-Silva on an RBI single.
The game was ended after the seventh innings due to darkness.
Freshman Angel Cabrera started the game on the mound for the Express, tossing three innings while recording two strikeouts. Manuel Corniel, Alex Garcia, Chris Dominguez, and Andry Sanchez all recorded a strikeout in the loss while Brian Espaillat notched two strikeouts in the last inning of work.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
