Monroe Express Women's Basketball Falls at No. 1 Nassau in Regular-Season Finale

Garden City, N.Y., February 18, 2020 – In their final regular-season outing, the Monroe Express women's basketball team fell on Tuesday night to the No. 1 nationally-ranked Nassau Community College, 86-51.

The Express concludes the regular-season with an 18-12 overall mark and 11-5 record in Region XV play.

Freshman Quanisha Griffin and sophomore Monae Laing finished the game double-doubles. Griffin tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals while Laing added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Freshman Ramatoulaye Diallo had six points, four rebounds, and three steals in the loss while her sister Aissata Diallo recorded two points, six rebounds, and two assists. Freshman Anya Shepherd had two points and four rebounds while Desteny Arzu collected two points and five rebounds.

Nassau opened the contest with five unanswered points to hold a 5-0 lead over the Express. Monroe responded back with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game at 5-5 with 7:19 to go in the first quarter. The Lions stretched out their lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Express 22-6 in the frame to enter halftime with a 42-18 lead.

The Lions controlled the paced of the second half outscoring the Express 44-33. 

Up next, the Monroe Express women's basketball team heads to the 2020 NJCAA Region XV Championship Tournament. The Express has secured the No. 3 seed, and will host a quarterfinal matchup against the No. 6 Dutchess Community College on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
