BRONX, N.Y., September 28, 2019 – The Monroe College Express women's volleyball program extended its winning streak on Saturday, downing Bunker Hill Community College 3-0 (25-6, 25-1, 25-3) on their home court at Roberto Clemente State Park. Monroe improves to 9-1 overall, earning their sixth consecutive victory.
*Due to a forfeit by Bunker Hill, the second match was awarded to the Express*
The Express swept the Bulldogs 25-6, 25-1, and 25-3 for the decisive victory. Monroe hit a combined .519 for the match, including a .900 second set. Defensively, the Express held Bunker to a -.389 hitting percentage.
Freshman
Irianna Castillo put up a new season-high of 19 service aces, six kills, and two digs to lead the Express. Sophomore
Smeritte Colon added 10 aces and three digs. Freshman
Jeribeth Hodge posted 11 assists in the win while sophomore
Rachel Arias nabbed seven aces and two digs. Freshman
Luz Frias collected five kills while sophomore Dennyer Hernandez finished with three of her own.
Up next, the Express travel to take on cross-town rival Bronx Community College on Tuesday, Oct. 1. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
