BAYSIDE, N.Y., April 23, 2019 –
Bianyor Germosen's three-run blast proved to be the difference as Monroe Express baseball defeated Queensborough Community College, 5-2, on Tuesday.
Bryan Diaz got the start for Monroe and allowed just one run over 4.2 innings pitched. The Express left runners on base in the top of the first and third before the Tigers struck first in the bottom of the third. A single and a pair of walks loaded the bases for Sean Lynch, who drew a hit-by-pitch to give Queensborough a 1-0 lead.
The Express left two more runners on in the top of the fourth, before taking the lead in the sixth.
Devon Marrero led off with a single to center, and
Jesus Tejada followed with another single, putting two on with nobody out. Germosen blasted a three-run homer to right, clearing the bases and giving the Express a 3-1 lead.
Brian Espaillat relieved Diaz after 4.2 innings, stranding two in the bottom of the fifth and three in the bottom of the sixth to keep the Express out in front.
The Tigers cut the Express lead down to one in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Queensborough strung together three-straight singles. Francisco and Alexander Andrew singled to put two on for Samuel Gutierrez, who brought Francisco home to cut Monroe's lead to 3-2.
However, Espaillat kept the Express in the lead, getting Bryan Santos to groundout with the bases loaded to escape a bases-loaded jam.
Both teams left runners on in the eighth, before the Express scratched out a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth.
