Monroe Express Baseball Splits Doubleheader against Orange County for First Win of 2019 Campaign

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y., March 24, 2019 –Monroe Express baseball split its Sunday doubleheader against Orange County Community College on Sunday to pick up its first victory of the season. The Colts topped Monroe, 6-1, in game one, before the Express came back to take game two, 4-3. With the split, the Express move to 1-7 on the year, while the Colts move to 5-4.
 
GAME 1: ORANGE COUNTY 6, MONROE 1
SUNY Orange took an early lead against the Express, scoring two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first. Ryan Trieste led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on Ian Engentino's groundout, and scored on Travis Grogan's triple to right to give the Colts a 1-0 lead. After Jason Bailey ground out, Grogan scored on a passed ball, giving Orange County a 2-0 lead.
 
The Express left a runner on base in the second, before cutting the Colts' lead in half in the third. Julian Ovalles-Garcia drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error to cut SUNY Orange's lead down to 2-1.
 
Both teams went scoreless over the next three innings, before Orange County broke through to extend their lead in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and runners on first and third, Bryan Forgione slapped a single to center, scoring Michael Cron from third to extend Orange's lead to 3-1. Trieste followed with the Colts' second triple of the game, knocking in two more, before Engentio knocked in Trieste with an RBI single to make it a 6-1 Orange lead.
 
Engentio held the Express to just one hit after the bottom of the third, and Adam Blakesley recorded the final two outs of the top of the seventh to give SUNY Orange a 6-1 victory.
 
Andy Rodriguez (0-2) took the loss for the Express, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits over 5.0 innings pitched, walking two and striking out a season-high seven batters. Engentio (1-0) picked up the win for the Colts.
 
Miguel Reicino led the Express with a hit and a walk, going 1-for-2, while Ovalles-Garcia scored Monroe's lone run, going 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored.
 
GAME 2: MONROE 4, ORANGE COUNTY 3
With three runs in the top of the second inning, the Express took an early lead against SUNY Orange. Bianyor Germosen led off the second with a single, and Esteban Perez reached on an error to put two on base. A batter later, Harold Valdez singled to right, scoring Germosen before Gorge Garcia's groundout scored Perez to make it 2-0.
 
Anthony Gonzalez Jr. capped off the inning with an RBI single, and the Express led 3-0, heading to the bottom of the second.
 
The Colts answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second on Stephen Kaiser's bases-loaded, two-run single, but Samuel Sosa was called out at third on appeal, and Monroe got out of the inning with a one-run lead.
 
Juan Jorge led off the top of the third with a triple, and Jesus Tejada followed with an RBI single, scoring Jorge to extend the Express' lead to 4-2.
 
Veras shut the Colts down over the next two innings, allowing just two runs on four hits, striking out six and walking three over 4.0 innings pitched.
 
Hafel Payano relieved Veras to start the bottom of the fifth, working around a two-out walk to keep SUNY Orange off the scoreboard. But the Colts scratched out a run against Payano in the sixth against Payano on Samuel Sosa's fielder's choice, cutting the lead to 4-3.
 
After Ian Engentio drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the seventh, Edward Mata came in to try and nail down the save. Jason Baily laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the game-tying run into scoring position, by Mata got Chris Rahm to line into a double play to give the Express their first victory of the season.
 
Veras (1-2) earned the win for Monroe, while Mata (1) picked up the save. Bailey (0-1) took the loss for SUNY Orange.
 
Germosen went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Tejada went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jorge added a triple, one of two extra-base hits for the Express, going 1-for-4 with a triple and a run scored, while Harold Valdez went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
 
The Express will look to make it two-straight when they open Region XV play against Suffolk County Community College on Tuesday, March 26 at 4 p.m. in Selden, N.Y.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has nine varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
