Monroe Express Women’s Volleyball Rallies Past Dutchess on Sophomore Night

BRONX, N.Y., OCTOBER 15, 2019 –  The Monroe College Express women's volleyball team wrapped up the home portion of their schedule on Thursday evening with a four-set victory over Dutchess Community College at Roberto Clemente State Park.
 
Prior to the match, the Express women's volleyball program honored seven members of their sophomore class of 2019: Dennyfer Hernandez, Julie Trowers, Reyna Cano, Smeritte Colon, Rachel Arias, Jamielee Ramirez Arocho, and Yaileny Gonzalez.
 
The Express took the first two sets (25-15, 25-19). Dutchess spoiled Monroe's chances of sweep, earning a 25-17 victory in the third set. The Express rallied to win the fourth set (25-16) securing the win.

Dennyfer Hernandez led the charge for the Express, as she recorded a double-double of 11 kills and 14 digs, along with three service aces. Julie Trowers finished with nine kills, a pair of blocks, and 13.5 total points. Reyna Cano ended the match with seven kills, five digs, and two aces.
 
Smeritte Colon led the Express defensively with a match-high 18 digs. Jeribeth Hodge dished a match-high 18 assists while Rachel Arias collected 14 assists and five digs.
 
Irianna Castillo added five digs, three aces, and two kills, Jamielee Ramirez Arocho posted three aces and two digs, and two kills while Luz Frias added six kills and Doraly Caraballo collected five digs.
 
With the win, the Express improve to 17-2 overall and 15-1 in conference play.

The Express close out the regular-season this weekend with a pair of Region XV matches on Saturday, October 18. Monroe opens the day taking No. 4 nationally ranked Fashion Institute of Technology at noon and cap the day facing Borough of Manhattan Community College at 1:15 p.m. Both matches will take place at BMCC.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 30 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has 11 varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
