BRONX, N.Y., September 4, 2018 – Monroe College Express women's volleyball rallied back from a 2-1 deficit to send the match into a decisive fifth set, but Bronx Community College took the fifth set to top the Express' season opener, 3-2 at Alumni Gymnasium on Tuesday.
The Express jumped out in front with a 25-22 first set win, but the Broncos came back to take set two by the score of 25-19, evening the match at one set apiece.
Bronx Community College outlasted the Express to win a hard-fought set three, 26-24, but the Express came right back to win set four, 25-14, sending the match to a decisive fifth set.
However, the Broncos defeated the Express, 15-12, in the fifth, and final set to take home the victory, and drop the Express to 0-1 (0-1 Region XV) on the year.
Two freshman led the way for the Express, as
Julie Trowers tallied eight kills and seven blocks, while
Rachel Arias added 10 aces and nine assists.
The Express open their home slate on Thursday, Sept. 6 when they take on Orange County Community College at 7 p.m. at Roberto Clemente State Park in The Bronx.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's rugby, and the newly added club women's rugby team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of Monroe's Bronx campus has six teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level beginning with their inaugural seasons in the fall of 2017.
