Monroe Express Women’s Volleyball Drops Final Two Matches of Regular Season

BRONX, N.Y., October 20, 2018 – Monroe Express women's volleyball fell to the Borough of Manhattan Community and the Fashion Institute of Technology, 3-0, in straight-sets on Saturday at Roberto Clemente State Park as part of a Region XV Double-Dual.
 
Match 1: Borough of Manhattan 3, Monroe 0
BMCC jumped out to an early, 5-0 lead in the first set off the serve of Jennifer Chacon, before the Express got on the board, cutting the lead to 5-2 on Smeritte Colon's service ace. The Panthers though would again pull ahead, extending their lead to eight, before the Express could win the serve back.
 
Monroe was able to cut the deficit to three, but the Panthers again pushed ahead and pulled away, taking the first set, 25-15.
 
Dennyfer Hernandez gave the Express an early 2-0 lead in the second set with her kill, but after a back-and-forth start, including two ties, BMCC took the set 25-16.
 
The Panthers opened a 12-4 lead in the third set, and the eight-point deficit proved to be too much for the Express, as BMCC took the set, 25-10, and the match, 3-0.
 
Julie Trowers led the Express with four kills and two blocks, while Rachel Arias tallied a team-high seven assists. Defensively, Colon totaled seven digs, while Liz Moralez added six digs, an ace and an assist.
 
Match 2: Fashion Institute of Technology 3, Monroe 0
The Tigers quickly jumped out to an early lead against the Express, and took the first set by the score of 25-6.
 
In the second set, the Express fought back after an early deficit to tie the match at 8-8 and 11-all, but Jenna Butler gave FIT a two-point lead, and after some back-and-forth play and an Express timeout, the Tigers pulled away with a 25-20 victory.
 
Up two sets to none, FIT again took an early lead to open set three, eventually earning a 25-8 victory to take the match, 3-0.
 
Trowers again led the Express with five kills and three blocks, while Hernandez added three kills, four aces and two blocks.
 
With the two losses, the Express wrap up the 2018 campaign with a 2-18 (2-17) record.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
