BRONX, N.Y., April 11, 2019 –Monroe Express JV baseball fell to the Monroe Mustangs JV in their second intra-campus matchup of the season, 12-3, in a run-rule shortened seven innings on Thursday at Roberto Clemente State Park.
On four walks, the Express took the lead, scoring first in the bottom of the first inning.
Yony De Leon drew a leadoff walk, and
Jasson Medina drew another walk to put runners at first and third. De Leon was caught stealing third, but Medina took second on the play and third on a dropped third strike.
Daniel Coradin drew another walk and stole second, before a wild pitch scored Medina, giving the Express a 1-0 lead.
On the mound for Monroe,
Hafel Payano pitched a scoreless frame, before De Leon held the Mustangs scoreless for another two innings, walking one and striking out two.
However, with one swing of the bat in the top of the fourth, Keanu Paulino tied the game with a solo homer to left. Bryant Perdomo was then hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a balk, and third on a wild pitch, before scoring on another wild pitch to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
The Mustangs loaded the bases after a trio of walks and a pair of strikeouts, and Chayanne Carty brought home another run with a bases-loaded walk, extending the Mustangs' lead to 3-1.
Leandro Rodriguez worked a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, but the Mustangs struck again in the top of the sixth to extend their lead. Carlos Aranda's three-run blast highlighted a six-run inning for the Mustangs, while Perdomo's two-run single capped off the frame, giving the Mustangs a 9-1 lead.
The Mustangs added three more unearned runs in the top of the seventh on a muffed throw and a two-run single by Eric Diaz, extending their lead to 12-1, before the Express rallied in the bottom of the frame.
With two outs,
Luis Aviles singled to center and stole second. Medina singled to short, scoring Aviles from second, cutting the Mustangs' lead to 12-2. Medina advanced to second on a wild pitch, and
Key Jimenez followed with a single, putting runners at second and third.
Coradin knocked in another run with an RBI single, but
Andry Sanchez groundout out to end the inning, and give the Mustangs a 12-3 victory.
Medina (0-2) took the loss for the Express, who fall to 0-6 on the year. Paul Delgado (2-1) picked up the win for the Mustangs, who finish the year at 6-12.
Coradin had a team-high two hits, going 2-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and an RBI, while Medina scored a team-high two runs, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
The Express will be back in action on Monday, April 15 when they take on Vaughn College at 3:00 p.m. at Flowers Park in New Rochelle, N.Y.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has nine varsity and junior varsity teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
