NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Monroe University – Bronx men's basketball team picked up another Region 15 win on Thursday evening, this time defeating Nassau Community College, 64-47, at Monroe Athletic Complex.
The Express have now won three consecutive regional games to advance their record to 3-1 in Region 15 play and 4-2 overall.
"Our attention to details, plus our energy and effort, were keys to tonight's victory," Express Head Coach
Chris Neely said.
Steven McGriff had another big game for the Blue and Gold, scoring a game-high 23 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. He also grabbed a team-high nine boards.
Andi Metaliaj snatched seven rebounds.
Michael Samuda generated five points, six caroms, three steals, and two assists.
The Express trailed 18-17 in the early stages of the contest but changed the game with eight unanswered points, capped off by a 3-point shot from McGriff, to catapult Monroe to a 25-18 lead with 4:07 to go in the half. The Express eventually went into the intermission with a 32-23 benefit over the Lions (1-5, 1-3 Region 15).
Nassau could not get back into it as Monroe built its lead up to as many as 19 during the second half on its way to the 64-47 victory.
For the Express during the evening,
Adrian Rosario and
Jalonie Pittman each snatched six rebounds with the latter delivering three assists.
Paolo Avvento compiled seven points, four steals, a trio of rebounds, and just as many assists.
Malike Smart also scored seven points to go along with two providers and two boards.
Monroe will host nationally ranked No. 11 Dutchess Community College this Saturday at Monroe Athletic Complex. The rematch of last year's Region 15 Championship game will begin at 3 p.m.
